Nice! I wish there was a little more information about where these ads came from, though. Where did you find the Heroin ad, for example?

I like to think of the Cellophane Bread Girl as a zombie, and the jam Mom is spreading as BRAINS!

Works for the spaghetti-eatin' lad as well.

Every time I see old Lysol ads, I never know whether to laugh or cry.... I do like all the old ones for medications, though.

Oooh, Belladonna Backfire! I've been looking for a new drag name.

The Scarol ad is a spoof,
not a real ad.

I like Carrot Bottom,
the anti-Carrot Top.

The "ad" for heroin isn't an ad - just a photo of an old bottle. And, yes, heroin used to be prescribed for various maladies.

The Pears Soap ad is really upsetting me. The first time I looked at it I could have sworn that that was a bloody sponge on the right.

Ah, if only the ads were big enough to read the small print. The Camels speed skater, for example. We know he's an Olympian, but who? And who are the little people on the right side of the ad. Enquiring minds want to know!

I don't find anything remarkable about the ant farm ad, but maybe it's just me.

That Union Carbide piece is just sad, considering what happened.

The Speedskater is Jack Shea

Cool stuff, especially the "Mabel is unstable" one. I've got a few old ads on my blog. It's kinda like James Lileks, only without the talent.

The ant farm ad is remarkable to some because it's one of the "old school" As Seen on TV ads, if you're into that sort of thing.

I had one of those ant farms when I was a kid.

I've seen it before, but my very favourite is the happy pig carving himself up for our enjoyment.

Such sacrifice for our pork-eating pleasure!

As a kid, we bought the Ant Farm from that exact ad! But like most comic book ads (e.g., sea monkeys), not precisely as shown. The "dirt" was a white crystaline powder (you figure that one out). And the "farm" at the top was made of all green plastic. No red roofs, etc.

To thier credit, however, the ants they sent were alive and they did tunnel through the white powder quite extensively, I think largely by snorting it.

They should have call it an "Ant Studio 54" !!!

Heroin is actually a registered brand name of the Bayer corporation. It was developed, by the same chemist even, within about two weeks of the development of Aspirin.

You just answered a question I've had for a long time, namely, who is that Peter Pain character. He turns up in one of the early MAD stories, a spoof of the "Medic" TV show, bedevilling a violinist. (It's collected in one of the MAD paperbacks, "The Brothers MAD" I think.)

I'm just so thankful that the Philip Morris Co scientifically proved that their cigarettes were less irritating to the smokers nose & throat. I'll sleep better knowing that...

I always been amused by "comic" drawings where animals delight in their imminent demise, but Seppuku Porky is in a class by himself.

Love that 'Smoking isn't curative'
ad. Highlighting a products bad point and selling it as a positive is marketing genius.

I think the creepiest ones are the children with evil grins and Satanic eyes; and the one with the pig slicing itself to pieces. Ugh! What were they thinking??

the old dude with the raised cane in the throes of "senior agitation" is pretty cool! Rather than tranquilizing him they should let him rein free and see what he does -- from a distance.
